A FEARLESS father from Cubert is preparing to spend Hallowe'en in a haunted castle – by himself.
But while most people would probably sit tight, cross their fingers and wait for the sun to come up, seasoned ghostbuster Chris Adams is actually hoping things WILL go bump in the night.
The 36-year-old has dedicated the last seven years of his life to investigating, and usually disproving, reports of ghouls, ghosts and poltergeists.
Interested
He reckons that after 200 visits to haunted houses up and down the country, his stay in Pengersick Castle, Praa Sands on October 31 might be the spookiest yet.
Chris told the Cornish Guardian: "This is supposed to be one of the most haunted places in Cornwall so I'm really interested to see if anything happens.
"They've apparently had teams in there before, but this is the first time anyone has gone in totally on their own overnight.
"From what I understand there are supposed to be quite a lot of poltergeist activity, things moving about by themselves, and also figures that have been seen. We'll have to wait and see if I spot anything. I'm definitely expecting it to make my top ten haunted house list."
Care home manager Chris made the unenviable decision to stay at the castle after hearing from one of its trustees that it was in dire need of renovation work, which could cost up to £300,000.
He will be staying at the castle between 7pm and 4am, using highly sensitive infra-red cameras and sound recorders to capture evidence of any paranormal activity.
Amazingly, he said he wasn't all that scared about the prospect of spending the night with headless horsemen and spooky spectres – despite describing some frankly terrifying past experiences. I'm a sceptic really, I'm just trying to find out the reasons behind what's going on," said Chris, who lives with his wife and two children at Tresean.
"More often than not there's a reason behind what's going on and it has nothing to do with ghouls and ghosts. But occasionally you do find something you just can't explain and I do get the heebie-jeebies.
"Once I felt something leaning on my shoulder and when I turned round there was no one there. I've also been pushed and pulled and even had a voice whisper in my ear before. That was unsettling."
Chris said that usually there's a perfectly rational explanation for hauntings. He related one tale of how he had gone to investigate a series of figures that had been seen crossing a field and then disappearing.
Shadows
"I saw one of them and charged after it but it disappeared," he said. "But it turned out to be headlights reflecting off trees and casting shadows which looked like a figure moving through the fields."
