History
In the 18th century the iron ore industry in the
Forest of

Dean diminished and the area saw an increase in coal mining which continued into the 20th Century. However, in the mid 1820’s ironworks were re-opened in Parkend (Currie, Herbert, Baggs & Jurica, 1996).

In the late 1780s the Forest

had in excess of 120 coal mines, the bulk of which were in Parkend and Ruardean Walks. However, the village itself developed later, with most of the housing being built after the reopening of the ironworks (Currie, et al., 1996).

In 1725, a dwelling was recorded at Parkend which may be the single property, shown in the 1770s, standing west of a bridge which carried the road linking Coleford with Purton and Gatcombe via Yorkley, across the brook (Currie et al., 1996). This site was then occupied by the Fountain Inn from 1841, a location used by several friendly societies during the mid 1850’s (Currie et al., 1996).

A very large area of land, which included the house that later became the Fountain Inn, was owned in 1776, by Thomas Barrow.

I contacted Michelle, the Landlady, about carrying out an investigation and she kindly agreed for it to take place. I left for the investigation on the date agreed.

It was a bitterly cold night with tempatures down to minus 3 and a crystal clear sky. I eventually found the inn after getting lost for a good 30 mins, and it was worth it just to see this beautiful inn backing on to the forest.

I met up with Michelle and she explained to me the rooms in which the activity took place. She had kindly only told me where the activity had been encountered and not what type of activity until after I had finished investigating each room. I concentrated on bedrooms 5,6 and 7 and the corridor which leads to these rooms. I set up the cctv system in all 3 rooms and locked off the camcorder in the corridor.

I watched the cctv for almost a hour and half with no joy. The cameras were not working as they usually do. Signal fluctuation was occurring with missing pictures. Whether it was paranormal or not I wasn't sure. I had been told by Michelle that the stairs where I was set up was a hotspot for battery failure with camcorders etc. Or could the reason simply be that the thick walls were making the signal poor. I did wire up a couple and had the same response which is strange as when the cameras are wired up you usually get a crystal clear picture.

I decided to pack the cctv away and do timed vigils in each area. The inn had now closed and Michelle was sat in the bar area downstairs.

I first spent a 30 minute period in room 7. Of all the rooms, this was supposed to be the most active. Apart from the central heating tapping in the corner it was quiet although there was a very strange atmosphere in the room.

I can't explain this feeling but if you carry out a number of investigations you seem to develop this sensitivity. Its like being a human transmitter for paranormal activity.

Next came room 6. This was quiet and I actually could have fallen asleep! The same had to be said for room 5. It was now about 0100.

I decided to sit in the dining area for 30 minutes and all was quiet once again. Next, I tried the kitchen and this was also quiet.

I then made my way back to the corridor upstairs. I had been told by Michelle that al ot of activity had been reported in the corridor and the bedrooms around 02.00. I sat in the corridor, switched the lights out and waited. I waited for about 45 minutes and experienced nothing, apart from hearing Michelle moving around downstairs, or so I thought!

I packed up my equipment and relayed to Michelle the results of the night. In passing, I laughed saying I just heard her moving around. She explained that she had not moved from the fireplace. This I found very odd as I had definately heard footsteps within the bar area.

I said goodbye and left.  It was cold and I was tired.

Although there was no great activity I may bring the group back to see if more areas can be explored, hopefully capturing one of the many spirits that are supposed to haunt The Fountain Inn.

The Ancient Ram Inn

Thursday 6th March 2008

History of The Ancient Ram Inn
Possible build date – early 11th century, but can be proven back to 1145. It was used to house masons constructing nearby St. Mary’s Church. Maybe slaves and children were also used for this purpose.

The Inn was once a Church House and housed the now famous “Bishop” in the Bishops room – It is not clear if there are separate spirits of a Bishop, a Priest and a Monk or perhaps it’s the same spirit interpreted differently by people who encounter the said spirit. Ancient maps show original building could be 3 times as large as today’s building.
There is a tunnel from the Fireplace in the bar to St. Mary’s Church – age unknown, and another to Lacock Abbey. These tunnels may have been used later on be Highwaymen and other wrong doers.
The site is built on an ancient pagan burial ground dating back over 5000 years and is also built on a crossing of ley lines.
Wottons last two Highwaymen frequented this premises and hid in the weaver’s attic.

There is good evidence of Devil Worship having been practiced at the Ram and also ritual sacrifice of children.

I had decided to put my ghost hunting to good use and raise some money for the PDSA.

John the owner of the premises agreed to let me carry out the first ever lone ghost hunt for charity.

So on Thursday 6th of March I took the short journey over to the ram.

I must admit I was feeling slightly nervous which was very odd for me.

At 20.00 I arrived at the ram and was greeted by John. After a chat and a brew it was time to start my investigation.

I started in The Bishops room one of the most active rooms in The Ram.

I sat in the chair by the fireplace for almost an hour with no activity apart from a lovely orb I caught on my camcorder. (see link).

I then went for a break and then returned to the staircase in between the Witches Room and The Bishops room. Once again no activity.

It was time to investigate the Witches room. In recent investigations I have found the Witches room to be one of the most active rooms in the house.

I sat there for almost an hour with no activity once again. On viewing footage afterwards I did catch a orb on camera. (see link)

Time for a break.

Not to be put off by the lack of activity I decided to sit out a vigil in the Barn. This is one of the areas which really unnerves me. I do not know why.

I decided to go for it.I shut the door behind me switched of the light and walked down the narrow walkway to the otherside of the Barn. If anything happened now I was in a whole world of trouble.I sat there quite nervous for over an hour. It was so dark I was glad of the view finder on my camcorder to see what was around me.Once again there was no activity.

I then went for a break to warm up and have a brew.

John had the right idea see pic

My last hope was the bar area in recent investigations this has been a active area.

I sat in there for almost 2 hours with no activity.

I then decided to stroll around the inn visiting diffrent rooms. Things were that quiet I even fell asleep in the Witches room on one of the beds.

It was time to leave. Cold tired and very dissapointed.

CONCLUSION

After many visits to The Ram inn I have to say there is some strange activity I have witnessed. This activity seems to happen on some occassions but on other visits does not occur.

Like with alot of places I have visited you can not expect activity to occur all the time. Quite often nothing occurs.

As its reputation as being one of the most haunted buildings in the country I cant comment. I have visited places with alot more activity.

All I can say it is worth the visit just to see this gorgeous building and if you witness any activity It will be a bonus.

Some great news I managed to raise £200 for The PDSA by staying the night in The Ram Inn.

HAILES ABBEY

29/5/2008

I decided to visit this location after investigating many reports of monks seen wandering this old ruined monastry.

After not visiting any locations on my own for a few months I was itching for a lone investigation.

EQUIPMENT

Sony camcorder with Cobra fitted.

Digital camera

Night vision minocular with recording device

INVESTIGATION

I arrived at the Abbey at 20.30.As it was the first time I visited the area it was perfect timing just before it started getting dark.

The weather had been really bad on the drive up with flash flooding in places. It was overcast and the ground was wet but there was no showers Yet!

I decided to have a look around and get my bearings whilst it was light. The area was gorgeous the ruins sat in the middle of nowhere. The lawn in the centre of the Abbey was recently cut and the ruins oddly well placed.

The Abbey had a very uncanny feel my whole body felt tingely which I have learnt to accept there is a strong energy in the area. This feeling tends to be a prewarning sign of activity when I feel this way on entering a location and this feeling was really strong.

I filmed the whole area and took many pictures.

Here is a very odd picture I took.Look in the far right bottom corner. This distinctive light was hovering above the ground.

Here is a copy of the photograph with the darkness taken away.

I took multiple pics of this spot and this image didnt reproduce.

I then wandered back to the car for a drink.

After about 20mins I set up my minocular and recording device and re entered the grounds. This time I felt more at ease strange seeing it was pitch black.

Several minutes of scanning the area with no activity I decided to call out trying to drum up some activity with no response. Then a crazy thought came through my mind how about saying the lords prayer.I spoke out loud relaying the whole prayer.Im not a beliver in God and I felt quite stupid.

Almost half an hour went by and then the oddest feeling came over me.I can only describe it as a comfort feeling. You know when your sat in the sofa with a mug of cocoa watching a good film.

The camera came out and I took a few pics.

Here is a strange one. This fog seemed to be right in front of me.

I would like to add it was not a foggy night. It was mild so my breath couldnt cause this.I attempted to recreate this pic with no joy.

Just when I felt things were changing for the better the heavens opened.I raced back o the car and waited. There was no let up.I decided to go home and return another day.

CONCLUSION

I cant really give a full report as I had only been there 2 hours at the most.

The pictures I caught were very strange.

The video footage came back with nothing paranormal.

The strange feeling I picked up was def the strongest I have ever felt in a location.

Is the Abbey haunted I dont know.

With further investigation I maybe able to have an answer.

SEDGEMOOR BATTLEFIELD

5/7/2008

2nd Investigation

This was my second investigation at this battlefield situated in Westonzoyland, Bridgewater.

I decided to bring Dave along so we could cover more ground.

EQUIPMENT

Nightvision Minocular

Laptop cctv recorder

Hand held recorder

MP3 recorder

INVESTIGATION

We started the investigation at 21.30.

I set the minocular up on a tripod perched in the boot of my Rangerover due to the relentless heavy showers and strong winds.

/i//tn_sedgemoor_034.jpg

T

his was covering the field to the rear of the monument.

Myself and Dave split up to try and cover as many areas of the battlefield as posible.

I carried out various evp tests in diffrent areas asking various questions trying to get a response. There was no results on listening to the recordings.

At various intervals we thought we had heard gunshots this could well have been just sound being carried by the strong wind from another area.

I decided to move the minocular to the field opposite from where I had it positioned before the time was about 12.30.

It was extremely dark now and the wind had eased slightly but the showers did not stop.

I decided to take a walk along the path which cuts threw the battlefield with Dave and a few other investigators who turned up from another group.

There was nothing out of the ordinary. Plenty of wildlife but no ghosts.

We headed back to the car as the weather turned for the worst again.

The other investigators who had joined us decided to leave it was aprox 02.30.

Dave was knackered and he decided to get some sleep in the car. I hadnt given yet.

I removed the minocular from the tripod and set of down the path scouring the fields.

Even though i was walking in near darkness on  my own I felt very relaxed and was enjoying the peace and quiet.

For all my attempts to find some activity nothing was too happen.

I finally left at 04.00 just as dawn was breaking.

CONCLUSION

After 2 activity free investigations at this remote but scenic area I have to say I really dont think its haunted.

I have tried every type of equipment to try and capture some activity with no results.

The thought of seeing an army of dead soldiers in battle is a great dream for most investigators but I dont think anyone will find them here.
